L'Écluse Madeleine was a trailblazer in popularizing wine bars in Paris, and it is still one of the best and most popular. Offering wines by the glass or the bottle, these trendy spots cater to those seeking food, wine and uncomplicated meals served in agreeable surroundings by a low-key waitstaff. The final bill ultimately depends on the modesty or the majesty of the vintages you consume -- as well as, of course, how much food you order.
Specializing in Bordeaux wines, all L'Écluse locations have the same menu right down to an identical plat du jour, but each wine bar features a different type of Bordeaux wine. The upmarket clientele drops by from noon until the wee hours to sample wines ranging from 5€ for a simple glass to over 60€ for a bottle of a grand cru. The seasonal food is selected to go well with the varieties of Bordeaux served. Featured are house terrines, foie gras, platters of charcuterie, beef tartare, grilled meats, assorted cheeses, a hot plate of the day, and their famous diet-destroying chocolate cake.
